North East England is a place of great contrasts. The hills, moorlands and forests of the North Pennines and Border hills form its western part. Its eastern side is a 160-kilometre section of North Sea coastline, on which long-established, industrial conurbations are grouped around the main river estuaries of the Tees, Wear and Tyne.
It is the smallest of the English regions in both area (8,592 square km) and population (2.6 million). It has four areas; Northumberland, County Durham, Tyne and Wear, and Tees Valley, each unique in character.
The North East Strategy will balance the economic growth of North East England and the needs of its large conurbations along with the sustainable development of its communities, both urban and rural, and the safeguarding of its natural assets.
